GAO Report on Medicaid Outpatient Prescription Drugs: Estimate 2007 Federal Upper Limits for Reimbursement Compared with Retail Pharmacy Acquisition Costs
A December 22nd Government Accountability Office (GAO) report confirmed that the new Medicaid reimbursement formula for generic drugs, mandated under the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA), will be economically devastating to many community retail pharmacies. Under this new formula, the GAO found that retail pharmacies will be reimbursed on average 36 percent lower than their costs to purchase generic medications dispensed to Medicaid recipients. This analysis provides credible, independent evidence that DRA changes to pharmacy reimbursement will be inadequate to cover the pharmacy’s costs of purchasing generic medications.
